The Wings and Wheels event
is a one-day get-to-
gether of two hobbies that are near and dear to most guys (and many
women)… airplanes and classic cars. You will find hundreds of cars,
trucks, cherry hot rods as well as vintage and modern aircraft of all de-
scriptions. Last year, I was fascinated by a long black hearse with a
large decorative filigree covering the entire back and side panels. The
side doors were propped open revealing a swing-out casket tray and
a rather eerie array of embalming instruments. There was also a photo
album showing images of various stages of restoration of the hearse.
The owner said when he found the vehicle is was virtually a basket case.
Rod Matthews, owner of Pete’s Auto Body, displayed his two current
passions… a Piper Cherokee Challenger and his meticulously restored,
1953 Jaguar XK 120 Fixed Head Coupe — a vehicle he received from
an old friend and wasn’t quite sure what to do with it. Though it had
been well cared for, the Jag was in dire need of major work or it would
have eventually just rotted away. So Rod and his crew, completely dis-
assembled this British classic, then rebuilt it from the ground up. Today
the car looks and runs like a new vehicle.
This year the event takes place on Sunday, June 10
th
, from 8am to 4pm.
Parking/admission is $4.00 or by donation if you walk or bike in. Pro-
ceeds go to the YMCA/Rotary Kids “Send a Kid to Camp” program.
The Canadian Owners and Pilots Association or COPA together with
The Owen Sound Rotary Club sponsor children who cannot afford to
go to camp and this event is one venue they use for fundraising. Admis-
sion for show-cars is a low $5.00. The 2012 event promises to be even
bigger than last year, with a fly-in of a B-25Mitchell from the Canadian
Wartime Museum. Also, a crew is arriving from Tillsonburg with re-
stored North American Harvard WW2 trainers. The public can book
a 20 minute flight in the trainers at Wings and Wheels. Come out and
see everything from hand built R/C planes to antique cars, vintage air-
craft and great food. It is a day for the entire family. The Owen Sound
Billy Bishop Airport is located on Highway #26 about 5 km east of the
Owen Sound city limits. For more info
