SECTIONING THE BRUCE
STORY & PHOTOS | CLAY DOLAN
METCALFE CREVICE LOOP
While shooting our fashion pages
for this summer issue,
we had the pleasure of
spending a few days in the Metcalfe Crevice. Including one
day that was 34 degrees without even factoring in the humidity.
We could feel the stifling heat and humidity as we climbed up
the Bruce trail towards the crevice. As we stepped under the
mature Deciduous canopy, the shade offered a nice respite
from the sun's burning rays. It wasn't until we reached the base
of the massive cliff face however, that we really felt the temper-
ature drop. From deep within the many caves that tunnel
through this amazing landform, cool, moist air mists its way out
creating a micro climate that feels almost ten degrees cooler
on those hot summer days. You can actually see the condensa-
tion on the rocks and the water vapor hanging as mist when the
cool subterranean air meets the hot, humid temperature outside.
The cool, comfortable temperature makes this area ideal for a
summer hike. Lucky for us the Bruce Trail goes right through the
crevice, climbs the side of the cliff face and gives one of the best
views around.
To get there from BlueMountain take Grey Road
19 through the round a bout, and follow it as it
turns right on Osler Bluff Road. Follow 19 as it
turns right again and climbs up the Escarpment.
When you reach the stop sign with Grey Road
2 continue straight ahead and follow to the next
stop sign. Turn left on 10th Line and follow it as it
winds its way down the hill. You will pass the
Bruce Trail as it intersects the 10th Line, but keep
going a bit further and there will be a parking
area on your left with a sign for the Kolapore Up-
lands. (Coordinates 44.416141,-80.443708)
Before you leave though, don't forget a good
pair of running shoes or hiking boots. You're
going to need them, as the trail requires a lot of
climbing.
