I decided to join the triathlon club while I was there and along the way
was captivated by XTERRA (off-road triathlon that involves 1.5km swim,
30kmmountain bike, 10km trail run). Even though I have no formal back-
ground in swimming, cycling, or running, growing up on Georgian Bay
with phenomenal trails in my backyard has made my transition into
XTERRA relatively easy. Not to mention a great deal of skill transfer from
downhill skiing for cornering, picking a line, moving at high speed, and
dealing with fear – or just ignoring it!
2011 was my first full year of dedicated triathlon and mountain bike rac-
ing and I was fortunate to have the extraordinary support of local cycling
club Arrow Racing and Squire John’s. Both resources I will forever rely
on! Last season was successful enough that I am now representing Spe-
cialized Canada and C3/Personal Best while racing in the elite (“profes-
sional”) category for both XTERRA and XC mountain biking.
The focus of my 2012 season is on the XTERRA American and World
tour, which wraps up with Canadian and USA champs in September fol-
lowed by worlds October 28
th
in beautiful Maui. To keep myself sharp
I have plenty of local races on my calendar including the Ontario Cup
XC series, the Tuesday night series at Blue Mountain, and the Element
Racing off-road triathlons.
So where do you ride on the Escarpment if you’re trying to compete
against the best in the world?
Amanda will head out on her mountain bike from her front door and
head down 10
th
line to 30/31st sideroad and up Pretty River into 3
Stage where she will play around and then head home to complete a 3
to 5 hour ride. On the road, her favourite loop again starts at her front
door then out to Bajeros, Glen Huron, and back to Collingwood.
