Other helpful tips I can offer?...
Ask for help.
Whether it’s from fellow riders, cycling club mem-
bers, or the local shop, you will never know it all. I learn some-
thing new every time I visit the boys at Squires – and I go in a lot!
Pick a goal.
If I wasn’t racing, I would get on my bike half as
much as I do now. There are plenty of events to choose from and
one of my favourites is the very popular and completely attain-
able Centurion at Blue in September.
Join the cycling club!
Let someone else do the planning.
Learn to read the radar maps.
Another great thing about this
part of the Escarpment is that when a stormmoves through it usu-
ally happens fairly quickly and we’re back to blue skies in no
time. If the weatherman is calling for T-storms, check out the radar
and time your ride so you don’t get caught out in the open.
Find your favourite coffee shop
, because coffee and cycling
are meant to be together. My top 3 picks are Ashanti, Espresso
Post and the Thornbury Bakery.
The Blue Mountains and Collingwood have a lot to offer to cy-
clists and it is only going to get better—likely why I decided to
leave my well-respected job as a physiotherapist in the GTA to
live and train up here. You only live once – get outside and
enjoy! Hope to see you out there this summer.
