Chronic ear infections can be very frustrating in our pets. For these patients, the ears may do
very well while on medication, but the infection comes back once the medications are stopped.
This is commonly seen in pets with ear infections caused by yeast called malassezia. In these
pets, the ear discharge is usually brown and waxy and can be quite copious. It also has a dis-
tinct odour. Chronic yeast ear infections are usually the result of an underlying disorder in the
pet, with skin allergies being thought to be the most common cause. For this reason, a close look
at the pet’s diet and environment is very important. Many of these pets may benefit from a hy-
poallergenic diet food trial and allergy testing may also be considered. Hypoallergenic pre-
scription diets are available through your veterinarian and it is best to consult with your
veterinarian before switching diets as there is a lot of inaccurate information out there on what
constitutes a true hypoallergenic food trial and how it is to be properly undertaken. Blood testing
for underlying endocrine disorders can also be beneficial. Some pets may require chronic life-
long medication as the underlying cause may not be found and in severe cases, surgery may
be the only answer to providing relief in some patients.
