the end of May, compared to $40,946,975 for the same period in
2011, a banner year. Major permits in March, April and May were
for Phase 2 of the 30 two-bedroomwaterfront suites at Cranberry Har-
bour Castle a $27 million expansion, Grandview, Sierra, Wyldewood
and Carandale homes and two commercial buildings on High Street.
May 26 a final approval celebration took place at Admiral Colling-
wood Place with Developer Stephen Assaff and Mayor Sandra
Cooper climbing into a lift truck to take the first ride up in the air to the
approximate height of the new six-storey building. Now it’s full speed
ahead at the sales centre!
The Huntingwood project on Highway 26West of Silver Glen on 48.7
hectares [121 acres] has submitted a plan of subdivision to permit 437
mixed residential dwellings including 143 detached and semi-de-
tached units, 149 townhouses, 144 apartments with four building each
with 36 units, a community centre, a commercial block and a retirement
home. A new Fire Hall is proposed for the north east corner of High
Street and Third. And there is approval in principal for the Central Park
redevelopment at an estimated cost of $35 million.
The Blue Mountains -
Building permits in The Blue Mountains
are a third of last year’s figure YTD at $9,158,160 as compared to
$24,101,710 in 2012. In March, April and May 34 permits were for
additions/renovations, decks and accessory buildings and only 6 per-
mits were for new dwellings.
Servicing for the Windfall development will start this summer. The
mega six-phase project at the corner of Mountain Road andOsler Bluff
Road with a total area of 54.43 hectares, is proposing a maximum of
747 residential dwelling units, a community park, commercial uses, a
private recreational block, open space and natural environmental
areas. This includes 351 detached homes and 258 semi-detached
homes and 36% of the project will be open space. Units will sell for an
average of $500,000 each. Details can be found on the Blue Moun-
tains website.
The Havens Brophy’s Land project received verbal approval from the
OntarioMunicipal Board. The development for 16 detached residen-
tial dwellings is in the Craigleith area. Also in the Craigleith area, Eden
Oak’s project has submitted a revised proposal to the County and town
for 217 units which include multi-unit buildings. Although the developer
of Telfer Lifestyle Village, Thornbury Meadows, a 10-acre property on
Napier Street, is now proposing an 86-unit adult lifestyle village rather
than the previous 97-unit figure, TBM council has reached an impasse
on whether or not to allow the development. To go forward the project
needs a zoning bylaw amendment.
With a goal to achieving attainable housing in The Blue Mountains, a
Not-for-Profit Housing Corporation is being established, owned by the
TBM and acting independently to create attainable ownership housing
units. TBM will provide start-up funding up to $25,000 in 2012 and
up to $10,000 in 2013, 2014 and 2015.
Beaver Valley Outreach and Cedar Run Horse Park are bringing one
of Canada’s most recognized icons, the Royal CanadianMounted Po-
lice (RCMP) Musical Ride to The Blue Mountains as part of the Cedar
Run Rodeo Weekend August 24-26.
The RCMPMusical Ride will perform on both Saturday, August 25 and
Sunday, August 26 as part of the Rodeo Weekend festivities. The sta-
bling area at Cedar Run will be open to the public free of charge both
days for those who want an opportunity to meet the riders and the
horses. In addition to the RCMP Musical Ride, spectators can look for-
ward to an international rodeo competition presented by Rawhide
Rodeo Company with professional riders fromCanada, the U.S., Mex-
ico and Brazil, including top hands competing for $20,000 in prize
money and coveted world championship points. The RCMP Musical
Ride represents a colourful Canadian tradition. The troop of 32 horses
and riders will perform a variety of cavalry drills choreographed to
music. Working through a unique medium, they support the RCMP com-
munity policing efforts throughout Canada.
Meaford -
Meaford has seen a significant increase in building per-
mits this year. By the end of May permits total $5,655,500 compared
to $3,466,100 in 2011. This figure includes seven new homes. And,
Meaford is attracting permanent residents. This will be supported by
several projects- the Gates of Kent, the Meaford Haven development
on the site of the former garden centre and Meaford Highlands- Well-
ness Centre, the mega 1,000-unit project on the 3rd Line, overlooking
the bay that is in the process of submitting its application.
Big news is the recent introduction of Royal Manor, a joint venture be-
tween The Brightstar Group and theMeaford Legion Branch 32. Royal
Manor is a new housing option featuring 51 self-contained independ-
ent living residences available through life leases. The buyer purchases
the unit, has a lease on the property for as long as they want to live
there, and may sell it at market share. A buyer has purchased nine
downtown properties inMeaford with the goal of revitalizing the down-
town core within the heritage guidelines.
What’s New? -
The Westin Trillium House at Blue Mountain was
recently voted number five in the 2012 Trip Advisor Traveler’s Choice
awards of top hotels for families in Canada. In 2011 and 2010, it was
the only hotel in Ontario to make the list of top 20 Canadian resorts
put out by Condé Nast Traveler Reader’s Choice.
Restaurants seem to be the “hot spot’ in the area. And Collingwood,
Thornbury and Village at Blue seem to be destinations for dining. And
NEVER to be missed, Michael Statlander is still considered a premier
world-wide chef in Singhampton. In Thornbury, the much loved location
overlooking the harbour, formerly Largos, with a popular terrace has
a new restaurant, Maiolo’s.
In case there was any doubt, the
MLS numbers released confirm
that the Georgian Triangle property
market just keeps rolling along,
marking the ninth consecutive
month in which the latest month's
performance exceeded that
of the same month last year.
