All the major fabric companies are showing col-
lections with bright and bold colour combina-
tions. Many include Ikat designs. Possibly the
world’s oldest method of decorating fabric - ikat
designs were used by hundreds of cultures from
south and central America to Japan, Indonesia
and Uzbekistan to name a few, and back in his-
tory as early as pre-Columbian times. It involves
dyeing the warp and/or the weft threads before
weaving. Think of a loom with the warp threads
strung and ready to weave, then dye is applied
in a traditional design style and next, as the fab-
ric is created using shuttles to add the weft
thread, the warp shifts slightly creating a pattern
that is fuzzy at the edges. Now think of over
scaled Ikat designs in gorgeous eye popping
colours like hot pink with lime.
