Escarpment Magaz ine Summer 2012
Fresh fruits and vegetables
are the primary products you will find at road-side markets. Unlike
grocery stores, where strawberries and raspberries can be found on the shelves year-round, markets offer seasonal
fruit at the peak of their ripeness. At the beginning of market season, one of the best things to grab is a bundle of as-
paragus from Meesters. Great on the grill, this vegetable when fresh is full of nutrients and flavour. And, the experi-
ence of northern Ontario blueberries makes the imported ‘fatties’ shrivel in comparison.
Next up, a wonderful mid-summer treat, Beaver Valley Gold honey from the Honey House in
Clarksburg. Honey bees are tireless farmers, whose product helps boost our immune systems
by acclimatizing our bodies to local pollens. Also, it pairs deliciously with peanut butter
spread on freshly baked bread from a local farm kitchen!
Rounding out the market season are our very own world-famous apples avail-
able at Almond’s Farm Market (between Thornbury & Meaford), Grandma
Lambes (Meaford), Oakley’s (Thornbury) and The Farmer’s Pantry (Clarksburg).
Coming in a variety of sizes, flavours, and colours, local apples are a great
addition to any picnic lunch. This growing season has been difficult due to the
unseasonable thaw back in March, so our growers will be dependent on your visits.
Hopefully you saved some of that honey, lovely when drizzled on Georgian Bay,
Red Prince apple slices.
And who could forget corn from Curries or Almonds? A great way to get everyone
around the table and compare eating strategies: the typewriter, around the dial, the knife-
and-braces, or the finicky one-kernel-at-a-time. Peel and boil or grill on the BBQ in the husk,
either way you're sure to find just-harvested-from-the-back-field corn on every local dinner
table come mid-to-late-July.These are just some of the many fruits and vegetables on offer.
Don't be afraid to talk to the vendor and be open to trying something new! Do you love
sweet onions? Insider tip: Jim Almond’s onions are simply a must.
