Escarpment Magaz ine Winter
2012
Winter
has a spontaneous spirit. We never know what we might wake up to, even
when it’s been forecast — SnowDay! These two little words evoke an expansive spectrum
of emotions. If you already are a connoisseur of the season, a snow day is a gift to be
treasured and explored. If you’re not, a snow day could be seen as an opportunity to
change your opinion.
In preparing a seasonal magazine, our readers are always top of mind and the fact is,
winter is not loved by everyone. We strive then, to include content that will appeal to
even the most hardened of snow detesters as well as those who can’t get enough of it.
I have to admit, I secretly hope we can convert the former and openly pray we can match
the exuberance of snow enthusiasts who are in abundance all over the Escarpment.
It’s not difficult to understand and even to empathize with the ‘detesters’ — shoveling,
driving, walking and darkness — who can love these things when they come wrapped
in ice, wind and white? Now to the ‘give us more’ group, shoveling is a fabulous and
freely gifted, cardio workout, driving is a skill-testing adventure, walking is a chance to
try out a new pair of weather-repellant boots, wind is simply a creator of artful shapes
and spaces that cause one to linger, consider and imagine and... darkness, well, the
possibilities are endless.
That leaves the white — oh, the white! Found at the extreme end of the visual spectrum,
white is symbolic with purity or innocence, cleanliness, peace and goodness. White
magic is a very good thing. Whitewash is a quick fix for fences. A white paper is an au-
thoritative report on a major issue and who can dispute the charisma of someone riding
a white horse?
Around these parts, the diffusing structure of transparent water ice crystals called snow
is what gets the most attention. We play with white. We slide on it, jump into it, throw it
at each other. We hail it as a conductor of frivolity, an organizer of like-minded friends.
We know it will force us outside or allow us to read by the fire.
You’re about to embark on a journey through our pages filled with white topics and
snow falling on everything—sure hope your winter is all it should be and that you enjoy
many pleasurable moments in the stillness of the white.
