editor’s note
It’s the season to savour.
Time to inhale the scents, to absorb the fleeting
warmth of afternoons, soft and sweet as apple cider and to anticipate what is coming.
Shorter days with longer shadows. Crisp mornings and vibrant colours—exploding like
bursts of random art. There is nothing subtle about Fall.
Then one morning, when all its spectacular beauty has grown tired and faded, Fall sneaks
away and an old friend moves in. One who often enters silently but sometimes shouts its
arrival—Winter.
Our Escarpment is the perfect setting, the ideal canvas for these two. Our hillsides beckon
to be painted and to showcase Autumn’s talent but they happily welcome the frost as well,
the shivers and the snows of Winter’s early days.
Harvest takes centre stage as throughout the region roadside markets offer up the
bounty—the results of exhausting days for the growers, toiling in the orchards and fields—
flavourful delights for us. We devote several pages in this issue to celebrating the harvest,
the ingathering of the goodness and the traditions that surround it.
We know these are also days of play, so we take you riding on the backroads with a
group of gutsy, leather-clad women and we introduce you to the horse and buggy scene
of our area’s Mennonite community. Winter play is taken very seriously in these parts,
especially for a select group of elite athletes, with golden dreams of Sochi 2014. These
young people have a goal—to get there. For them, the months ahead will be filled with
nervous anticipation, super-human training schedules and dedication to their skills. The
Canadian Team will not be announced until shortly before the Games begin so for some,
there will be tears, for others there will be a chance to shine. Thirteen of the Escarpment’s
top Snowsport competitors are showcased in “On the Road to Sochi” by Cara Williams
(pgs 32-48). Hang on to this issue and compare their thoughts of today with the realities
of tomorrow. It’s so exciting. They would love to hear words of encouragement from you,
(contact info for many of them is included). Even with our best efforts to reach out to area
athletes, we know we have undoubtedly missed a few, so we will update our website and
facebook pages frequently with whatever news is sent our way. Please stay in touch.
I relish these months of excitement, change, gatherings and celebrations. Thank you
for picking us up, perusing our pages and being an integral part of it all.
