With training complete and a properly fitting bike, the next step is to hit the road.
For most novice riders it is a good idea to go with a group. Not only for safety,
but as Nancy describes, “group riding has helped my skill level. It has made me
do things that I might not otherwise do – like ride down Scenic Caves Road”.
It’s important to find a group of riders with whom you feel comfortable. In every
group there will be varying degrees of experience. “The group needs to be sup-
portive of whoever might not be that confident,” explains Sharon.
In this group, they all watch out for each other and choose routes that will ac-
commodate everyone’s skill set. These women are not out to break any speed
records, or do anything crazy. “We want to keep it low key,” explains Wendy,
“Everyone has a career, so we just want to come out, ride and take it easy”.
Motorcyclists are a very friendly group no matter where you go. You can see
themwaving at each other on the roads, or chatting with other riders when they
stop for a break. This group of women is no exception, and they are always
open to newwomen joining their group. “If you’re interested at all about riding,
come see us Sunday mornings at Jozo’s,” suggests Suzie, “Even if you don’t
have a bike.”
These friends share a love of the outdoors combined with a willingness to take
a risk. Add in some laughter and you’ve got yourself a good ride.
