nowa fullyaccreditedprivateschool.
Ouryearbeginswhenstudents return toschool in themiddleofAugust
andhaveapproximatelyaweek in theclassroombeforeheading toSaas-Fee,
Switzerland for sevenweeksofon-hill trainingandschooling.Weski in the
mornings,dophysicaldrylandaswellasschoolingeachafternoon. Thegoal is
tohave twocoursescompleted, tohave36daysonsnowand for thekids to
haveseenandspent some time inEurope.Wecomebackat Thanksgivingand
it’s full schoolinguntil theendofNovember,when thekidswill finish twoaddi-
tional courses.”
During thewintermonthsathletesareengrossed in training, travellingand
racing.Education remainsapriorityandby theconclusionof theschool year,
studentshavecompleteda full course load. “Thekidsdoeight creditsandski
about150daysonsnow. Theyareable to travel,withouthaving tosacrifice
eithereducationor race training,”explains Jurg.
NSAemploysup tosixworld-classcoaches,achef,housesupervisorandsport
psychologist.AlongwithDirectorofOperationsNigelCooper,andschool
PrincipalNeilBuie, theNSA’sholisticapproachbuildsoutward from individual
studentneeds toaddress threecoredevelopmentareas;Academics, Fitness
andSkiRacing.NSAgraduatingstudentshaveachievedacombinedaverage
of84%over thepast fiveyearsandgainedacceptanceandscholarships into
someof the topCanadianandUSuniversities.
“Ourgoal isathleticallyveryclear,butwecan’t forgeteducation,because
whenskiingends,youneed tobehighlyeducated,whichcreatesoptions.
I’ve foundover theyears thatwhenyou lookat thegoalsandobjectivesof the
kids it reallyhaseverything todowithcreatingoptions. Theyknowhowhard
it is tocompeteat thehighest level,but theywant tobewell roundedandwell
travelled.Our track recordshows thatourgraduatesachieve this. LarisaYurkiw
isobviouslyoneof theseathletes.What sheachieved isahugesuccessstory.”
