WINTER
2017
|
I remember asking her at an early
stage in our relationship, “Howdo
you feel about coming up here
EVERY weekend?” I needed to
gaugeher commitment and interest
in this new found lifestyleanddedi-
cating most winter weekends to
comingup.
ShewasALL in too, thankfully.
Then it’s trulyabout thepeopleyou
meet (at the club and elsewhere).
The commonality is pretty obvious
and you can see it in their smile.
Their faces are flush froma variety
ofelements:acolddayskiingor fast
paced hike up the escarpment. At
the Apres-ski scene the smiles are
bigand storiesare shoutedat close
proximity. Peoplebumpupagainst
oneanother and things get rowdy.
It’s hard todiscern thekids from the
adults and it just becomes a loud
melee. We all start to talk about
next weekend, or how to stay
longer onSundays toenjoy theen-
tireafternoon.
Maybe we could try to come up
next Thursday night?What about
Friday training? After all, I need to
findanedgeonmybrother.

time and now call the area home.
Thesepeoplenowappear instantly
and infinitelywise inyoureyes.They
don’t seem to be in any big rush
most of the time and seem to be
extra chill on Sundays (just for the
record). Theconceptbecomesvery
intriguing to you as though these
families have solvedacomplex rid-
dleyouhaven’t quitegraspedyet.
In your heart you know what this
means andyouaskyourself, “How
could thiswork?”
Next thing you know, you’ve
bought a place up in the area.
Maybeyouhadplanned todoso in
the futureat somepoint but you just
so happen to have driven by a
place that looked really intriguing
one day and look… It’s for sale!
“Maybe we’ll just go look”, you
say. These are famous last words
frompeoplewhoownmultiplepets
andmore thanone residence.
The driving starts to add up and it
can get to you. There are some es-
pecially dangerous drives in the
winterbecause (surprise!)goodski-
ing can often mean bad weather
andworsedrivingconditions.Most
of us have had some sketchy mo-
ments on the road on a Friday
eveningorSundayafternoon.

south on snow covered roads.On-

real scare.
Since becoming a parent over 3
years ago, it was a new level of
scary.Oncewe had safelyarrived

and asked myself, “Why are we
doing this?”
