For many of us, equestrian is a sport for grown-ups. But children as
young as four are enrolled in lessons and competing on the circuit. Jen-
nifer Gray, one of the founders of the Georgian Bay Trillium circuit,
and long-time president of same, remembers being terrified at the sight
of her four year-old daughter in the walk/trot class, "She was so small!"
I spoke with Jennifer at her riding school, Jack Pine Equestrian Centre.
She was in the midst of hosting a Trillium show on a rainy Sunday. Jen-
nifer has been hosting two Trillium shows a summer for the past fourteen
years. "We get one hundred to one hundred and twenty kids per
show," she told me. "Sponsorship is important for these types of shows.
We couldn't do it without them. It's a lot of work putting on the show,
and when you can sit back and watch, it is very rewarding." When I
asked her how she felt about young kids showing she replied, "It's
healthy competition. You lose more than you win."
