Escarpment:
You finished your World Cup career with three victories,
seven podiums, and 15 top ten finishes. But you also underwent 22 oper-
ations due to injuries suffered including 3 reconstructive knee surgeries
and 13 orthroscopic procedures. Would you do it all again?
Todd:
I’ve added to those numbers in the last few years. I’m up to 24
operations now, with another one, a total knee replacement, in the plan-
ning stages right now!! But for sure I would do it all again! I’d be a lot
smarter this time around though. Experience is a valuable resource.
Escarpment:
You have been a spokesperson and raised awareness for
the Arthritis Society. Do your past injuries plague you today? What do you
do to combat this?
Todd:
In the 80’s and 90’s I raised over $4.5 million dollars for the
Ronald McDonald Children’s Charities through my “Ski Challenge”
events across Canada. That involvement gave me a real insight into the
lives of families with children living with cancer and other life threatening
diseases. It was a real humbling experience. My involvement with the
Arthritis Society was also a learning experience. It opened my eyes to
a disease that affects over 15% of all Canadians and is the major cause
of long term disability in this country. It affects both young and old and
has major consequences on mental health as well. I have personally
dealt with arthritis for many years already now but have things pretty
much under control with my own program of drugs, exercise and, unfor-
tunately, cutting out even those enjoyable things that cause further wear
and tear and aggravate the pain. I do less physical things now than I
used to for sure. But I’m not giving up skiing! At least not yet!!
Escarpment:
Of all the amazing mountainous places you could have
settled with your family, why did you choose to live in Grey County?
Todd:
Blue Mountain, Thornbury and this entire area are part of my
history. The hills might be small but our home here represents the friends,
family, lifestyle and the memories of a great upbringing in this region,
which is a valuable thing. As I mentioned earlier when talking about
Kitzbuhel, the history of certain special places are important to me. Every
day, the Blue Mountains brings back memories of the people and the
great times from my past here, which I guess I like to keep alive!
Now working as a Sales agent for Remax Four Seasons Realty in Thor-
bury, I feel especially proud to show clients around this region when
they’ve made the decision to relocate here. I have nothing but good
things to say about the place I call home.
