adaywith theSunPeaks ski school, and spent the
rest of the trip “teaching”Dak and I how to ski in
the trees. His instructor, a 19 year-old ripping
Swede namedAxel, remarked, “He doesn’t talk
much, but boy can he ski. Where did you say
you’re from?”
Inaddition to itsworld-class ski school, SunPeaks
isknown for itsDirectorofSkiing–OlympicCham-
pion, and Canadian Senator, Nancy Greene
Raine, who was notably named “Canadian Fe-
maleAthlete of the20
th
Century”. If you’re lucky
(likewewere) youmight get to ski withNancyor
at least catchaglimpseof her as sheglides past.
Nancy knows all the best spots on themountain,
and loves topointout thedozenormore treesdec-
orated with ribbons, bows and ornaments scat-
tered throughout the resort –this becamea family
pastime during our visit, andwe even created a
points system for spotting the trees first.
Witha fewhourseachday to ski onourown,Dak
and I had theopportunity tocheckout the tophalf
of themountain, including some incredibleglades
and off-piste powder filled bowls. No lift lines
meant quick laps, andperhapsmorenotably, we
encountered very few people up there. Coming
frombusyski resorts,weweren’taccustomed to the
quiet skier traffic in the high alpine on good
weatherdays.
