WINTER
2015
Awell-knownbootfitter byday (andoftenbynight),wildlifephotog-
raphy isa releaseof sorts forCam:momentsof reflection, andsublime
calm. The key, of course, is being in the right placeat the right time.
Camhasa$20 rule;hewillpurchase$20 ingasand travel rural con-
cession roads looking for “the shot” until his gas gauge points to
empty. Another of his tactics is to take two lefts anda right, stop the
carandseewhat hecancaptureon film.As for fancy lensesandpho-
tographic tricks,Camkeeps it simple. “Thegear that Ihave, is thegear
that I have. I don’t invest incrazy lenses, and I never usephotoshop.
Somedaysarebetter thanothers.”
Baitingand trespassingaremajor concerns of wildlifephotography
critics. Cam respects this andoften sticks to thewater, havinggreat
luck inandaroundour local harbours.
“Because theyhavewings, theymovearounda lot.So it’s just looking
at burmsof dirt andgrass, and looking foraperch.”
Cam’s photography isn’t limited to SnowyOwls; he also regularly
photographseagles,hawks, falcons,ospreyanddozensofbirdsand
wetland creatures. When asked if he has apreferred image he ex-
plains, “I don’t really have a favourite picture—it’s the next one I’m
going toget. It keepsmegoing. It’salwaysanadventure.”
