Showing encourages young people to believe in themselves and what
they can accomplish through hard work. It also teaches them to recog-
nize the accomplishments of their peers. Limits, too are an important
part of learning. Knowing when you can push your horse and yourself,
and knowing when to hold steady and focus on skill development and
refinement.
ChristineMartin also encourages her students to bond with their horse,
"When your horse is happy and loved, he will love you back."
Equestrian is a family affair. Val Shaw, a co-founder of the Georgian
Bay Hunter/Jumper ShowCircuit, is the mother of the current vice-pres-
ident Lori Shaw. Together she and her daughter braid the horses' hair,
load them onto the trailer, and take everyone to the show. They're a
team, she explains, "One compliments the other."
I asked Val about the changes she's seen on the Trillium Circuit over
the years. She said the level of riding has evolved and has become
more rider-educated. "Everyone's kicked it up a notch. The quality of
horse and rider has gotten better."
