Summer 2012
Escarpment Magaz ine
Let’s
begin with one of my favourite wines from Austria. Excellent any time of the year but most excellent
now for summer BBQ feasting.
Gruner Veltliner
(aka: GROOVey) - This would be considered Austria’s Sig-
nature grape for sure. Grown at high altitudes, making for an amazing green apple crisp acidity, refreshing tex-
ture but not overpowering. The good news is that Gruners are generally food friendly. Enjoy with salad, fish,
poultry or pasta.
I like...
Gruners run anywhere between 12-17$ through Vintages
Also, bubblies make perfect sipping for summer.

I recently happened upon THE most gorgeous rosé ever - Megalomaniac's Pink Slip Rosé. It is gor-
geous. (always a great story behind his wines too.) Also try, Pierre Sparr Brut Rise Cremant D”Alsace $17.95
Vintages - Medium bodied pink bubbly is made in the traditional champagne method- thus making it a Cremant
vs Champagne. You don’t have to spend buckets of money to get a quality sparkler. This is a 100% Pinot Noir
and has beautiful fresh wild berry taste making it a perfect Summer starter to any evening.
Summer would not be complete without a beauty Viognier. I tend to lean towards NewWorld- IE: California-
the long sunny growing season just makes for concentrated flavours that will have you begging for more. Typical
tasting notes of Viognier are peach, melon, apricot - which screams summer. Viogniers have a wonderful sweet-
ness with a refreshing texture which means the wine will never be too sweet. Viognier will go well with
Spicy dishes, say Thai or Indian.
I like...
Napa Vintages - Frogs Leap - $34.95 and McManis Viognier $18.95 - LCBO-
Bongiovanni Arneis 2009 - Piedmont Italy- $16.95 Vintages.
Originally, Arneis was used by producers to soften the red grape, Nebbiolo. Also known as the
white Barolo. The Arneis graped is typically grown in Piedmont. It creates floral, pear and
apricot-scented, full-bodied, flavourful wines. Wonderful paired with Seafood.
I like...
Burgundy France Aligote- Jaffelin Bourgouge $15.95
Chateau Des Charmes VQA Aligote Niagara $10.95
Crisp and light, neutral citrus and light apple. Beautifully Summer paired with:
Crudite, Mussels, Salad, Escargot, Garlic,Trout.
