Escarpment Magazine Spring 2013
As Spring blossoms across the Escarpment, the urge to hit the greens is blooming as bright
as ever. Grounds crews are out in full force returning tee boxes, fairways and greens to pris-
tine shape for the season. Golfers are fine-tuning their mechanics or working on a complete
make-over of their swings, and water hazards and sand traps sit patiently awaiting their prey.
Simply put, spring means golf and, at Blue Mountain Resort, golf means Monterra! Nestled
into the base of the scenic Escarpment property, Monterra Golf is one of the region’s most
beautiful, challenging and affordable public courses.
Monterra was designed by renowned course builder Thomas McBroom. The course opened
in 1989, and has since been recognized as one of Canada’s top 100 resort golf courses.
Monterra, meaning "land at the bottom of the mountain,” is a true challenge for any level of
golfer. It’s a traditional links course, featuring rolling bent-grass fairways, razorback mound-
ing and 86 bunkers, as well as ravines, creeks, ponds, and some spectacular elevated tee
shots with views of Blue Mountain and the shoreline of Georgian Bay. Monterra is a par 72
course, reaching 6,581 yards from the Gold Tees. It also features four tee blocks so the length
plays fair for all ability levels.
It has become one of the region’s most established public courses enjoyed by members, local
golf enthusiasts and guests to the resort. “Our daily tee sheet speaks to the diverse range of
golfers that we see play the course each day,” says Adam McCutcheon, Golf Operations
Manager, BlueMountain Resort. “Ranging from seniors, to expert golfers, to first time players,
the course can be enjoyed by all levels and is an affordable option.”
While the course is popular to resort guests, Monterra’s challenging layout and affordable
prices make it a favourite for local players – particularly midweek, when the pace of play is
ideal and tee times are generally available.
Monterra offers a special midweek rate of $69 (+ HST), valid 7 days a week from season
opening until May 16, and valid from Monday to Thursday starting May 17. This rate in-
cludes a cart with GPS software to track your round.
In 2012, Blue Mountain installed state-of-the-art GPS software into a new fleet of carts, to
greatly enhance the golf experience and make tracking your location to the pin much easier.
“The feedback from our players has been tremendous. It’s the only course in the area that
uses this GPS technology, and with our challenging layout it truly takes guessing out of the
equation,” adds McCutcheon.
“What sets Monterra Golf apart from other public courses isn’t just the golf,” explains Mc-
Cutcheon. “It’s the ability to step off the 18
th
green and into Ontario’s only mountain village
resort. Enjoy an après-tee beverage and meal at one of the resort’s many patios, shop or
take in a wide selection of events and activities at Blue Mountain Resort.”
