I’ve always
been interested Regatta sailing… but my little12 foot sailing dingy
just wouldn’t fit in. Luckily, my friend TimMatheson who is very involved with the Geor-
gian Bay Regatta suggested that I could always work as a crewmember on one of
the larger boats. As appealing as that sounded I still thought of it as a ‘closed frater-
nity’ where outsiders weren’t welcome. Tim laughed and informed me that although
a good number of the sailors have been involved with the regatta for many years,
they are all a welcoming bunch who are always willing to befriend new recruits. “In
fact,” offered Tim, “why don’t you ask your pilot friend, Steve Esplen to fly over the
regatta and you can capture photos of the boats from the air. I bet the sailors would
love that.” Next, I contacted Ron Owston, co-chair of the 2012 regatta and he con-
sulted the executive who approved of the fly over as well. The plan was a go!
