I readanarticle last seasoncalling theEscarpment
a“raceobsessedoddity”. It’s true that racing is
verypopular in theseparts, but Iwouldargue that it
haseverything todowithour topography. Since
wedon’t havemountainous terrain, oranaverage
snowfall above threemeters, ouroptionsarea little
more limited. Theway I see it, if youare truly
passionateabout skiingor snowboarding, and
you reallywant topush the sport, weonlyhave two
choices; Freestyle, (includingpark, pipe,moguls
andurban)or racing.
Youdon’t needbigvertical tohaveagreat race-
course. Likewiseyoudon’t needamountain to
builda terrainpark.A jump isa jump, andagate is
agate, nomatterwhereyouput them.And tobe
honest, thehillswehaveon theEscarpment are
perfect forboth.Whichwouldprobablyexplain
whywehave somanyWorldCupathleteshail
from theseparts. That, and the fact thatwehave
someof thebestAlpineprograms inCanada.
...skiingand riding
on theEscarpment is
more than theodd
powderday.
