Carving isoneof thegreatest sensations in sport, espe-
ciallyat high speed. To start, carvingcanbeachieved
safelyandeasilyonamoderate slope.Make sureyou
have sharp skis that areproportional toyourbody. Then
just thinkof rollerblade turns…Run straight a littlebitwith
anathletic stance, then roll bothanklesat the same time tipping the skisupon
edge.As speed increases, you thenget yourbody inside thearca littlemore
andheavieron theoutside foot, bracingagainst the forces. Let the lower
jointsmove independentlyof theupperbodyandget intoanice rhythm, and
flow. Stay in themiddleof the runandhave fun!

I havealwaysbeenabigbeliever that great skiing starts
from thebottomup. Sohere ismy tip. Let’s startwith the
feet...
Manypeoplewill tell you that tocarveyouneed to tip
the skisoveranduse theedges. Surprise! Surprise!But,
youneed toknowhow to tip the skisoverandwhere in the turn to start using
thoseedges.Carvingagreat turn likeTed Ligety,MarcelHircheror Phil
Brown startswith the feet early in the turn.
Great skiersmanage touse their feet even though theyare lockedaway
fromview in thoseplasticboots. At theendof a turnall theweight ison the
outside ski, the skisareconnected toyour feet, so imagine theweight ison
theoutside foot in the turn. The inside foot hasalmost noweight on it as the
ski comesout of the fall line.Once the ski hasachieved thedesireddirection
change, there isaneffortmade tomoveonto theold inside foot and roll the
foot over from little toe side tobig toe side, in the topof the turn. Theold
inside footnowbecomes thenewoutside footand rolling the footover ishow
weuse theboot tomove theski—remember, theyareconnected. Thenew
outside foot is tippedover, engaging thenewoutsideskiedgeearly in the turn.
Earlyedgeon theoutside ski in the topof the turnallows the ski tocarve into
the fall line. Start the turnwell and itmight just beagreat turn.Wanna see

Withgreat conditionsandper-
fect groomingnothing isbetter than tippingyour skisover
and layingdown some sweet, pencil linearcs.Carving is
achievedby tipping the ski overat speedwithno skid-
ding.Carvinghasbecomemucheasierover theyears
with thedevelopment of shaped skis. With the ski beingnarrow in themiddle
andwiderat the tipand tail, pressuremust beadded tobend/flex the ski to
achieveacarve.
Learninghow tocarvecanbe relativelyeasy formost intermediate skiers.
Point your skisdown thehill, gradually tipyour skisoverbybendingyour
ankleandkneeand feel the ski bite inandcarve. Byaddingmoreangle
andpressure, youcan shorten thearc tomakea smaller turnand still con-
tinue tocarve.Nothing feelsbetter thana strongedgecarvingdownahill.

For carving turnson thegroomers inSouthernOntario,
youneed toget out early in themorningbefore the runs
get skiedout “Soyoucan rip the roy.” (AKA -Corduroy,
from theamazinggroomingweget).One thing that usu-
allygetsoverlookedbymanyavid skiers, is themaintenanceof their skis.
Most of the ski shopshavemachines like theWintersteiger that canharden
your edgesandmake them last longer tohelpcarve inall conditions. One
ofmy favoritequotes is still: “Tip it, and rip it!”Seeyouon the slopes.
