purchaseda farm in the springof 2006, asmi-
grants from “the city”. Nestledon70acres of nativegrassland in the heart of
GreyCounty, south of Chatsworth, theWilhelm’s farm now functions as a suc-
cessful, sustainable,ecological,humaneandorganic farm.DragonflyFarm raises
a variety of animals (beef cattle, heritage pigs, chickens, ducks, turkey, lamb,
donkeys) vegetablesand fruits.
Theoldadage, “yourchickensalwayscomehome to roost” is true.TheWilhelm’s
free-run layinghensandmeatbirdsall come indoors to roost justbefore thesungoesdown,protecting them frompred-
ators. Theyarededicated to feedingall theiranimals (except for the100%grass-fedbeef, lambandbison)mixedor-
ganic (certifiedorganicandorganicallygrown)grain feed rations inorder toprovide themwithminerals, saltandkelp.
Theseorganicandnatural supplementsareaproactiveapproach to livestockhealth. Theanimalsalsodrink from the
same freshwellwater as theWilhelms,whohave takenextra steps to fencearoundditchesandcreeks toensure safe
drinkingwaterandact asgood stewardsof their small pieceof land.

steadOrganic,”explainsMike. “Weare this regionsHomesteadOrganicDealer.Wemakeour living selling locally
andwedo the samewhenpurchasing.” Asgrass farmers, theentireDragonflyFarmoperation relieson thehealthof
the soil and thegrass it providesbecauseall theanimalson the farmareonpasture.Onlyorganicandecological soil
management practicesareused tomaintain the soil health. This includes fertilizingwithmanureproducedonlyon the
farmandonlyafter ithasbeenproperlycomposted (compostingencourageswormsand thatwonderfulgoodbacteria).
