Tobermory -
was oncean isolatedplace, reachableonlybywater
or two roughand twisting roads that cameupeither sideof the rugged
Bruce Peninsula. From its earliest days, Tobermory has watched a
steady parade of schooners and steamersmake their way through a
mazeof islands and reefs offshore. Many did not survive. Fishermen
begandroppingnets intoTobermory’sdeepnatural harbours,Bigand
Little Tub in the late1800s. Naval surveyorHenryBayfieldoriginally
named this port CollinsHarbour. It was renamed in1882byScottish
fishermen for theport of Tobermoryon the IslandofMull inScotland.
InApril 1912, thewireless station that replaced theold telegraph line
connectingTobermory to theoutsideworldpickedup the fardistantdis-
tress callsof a sinking ship— itwas theTitanic!
Today, Tobermory is considered the crown jewel vacation spot at the
northern tipof theBruce Peninsula. NationalMarine Park is the final
resting place of some two dozen wrecks that make Tobermory the
scubadivingcentreof theGreat Lakes.
There isacornucopiaof things todo inTobermory.Herehikerswill find
thebeginningof theworld-famous700-kilometreBruce Trail.Nearby
is thenewandexcitingBrucePeninsulaNational ParkVisitors’Centre
with its tall lookout tower. Visitors can ride theChi-Cheemaun across
theDevil’sGap toManitoulin Island,explore thewondersofFlowerpot
Island, andviewold shipwrecks fromaglassbottomboat.
Quaint shops, art galleries, ship chandlers, andawonderful array of
restaurantsserving freshwhitefish line theharbour. Want toscubadive,
