Markdale -
hasbeenahub forcentralGrey
County for many decades. Keep your eyes
open for farm-gate stores selling vegetables
and other produce in season. First settled in
1846 it was originally called East Glenelg,
after a nearby township. In 1864, it was re-
named Cornabus after the Islay, Scotland
hometown of then-postmaster Donald Mac-
Duffie (1814–1892). In 1873, Mark Arm-
strong sold land to the Toronto, Grey and
BruceRailwayon thecondition that the station
bearhisname.UnlikenearbyFlesherton,which
had failed to prosper after the railway by-
passed it, thenew railway stationbrought new
business toMarkdaleand itwas incorporated
asa village in1888. In2001,Markdalewas
amalgamatedwith the townshipsofArtemesia,
Euphrasia and Osprey to form Grey High-
lands.Of note: thevillagewasachartermem-
berof theCentralOntarioHockeyLeagueand
participated at the senior and junior levels
under several nicknames, includingMarkdale
Majors. Currently, theGreyHighlands Brave-
hearts of theGreaterMetro Junior AHockey
Leagueplayoutof theCentreGreyRecreation
Complex.
