Theywere leftwithadebate–do they renovate theexisting farmhouseorbuildnew?Theysoon
discoveredobtainingabuildingpermitwouldprovedifficult forastructuresoclose toa ravine,un-
less thestructurewaspre-existing. Theoriginalbuilding includeda fairly largecarport in its foot-
print,and thehomeowners learned theywouldnot requireavarianceon theexisting footprint to
obtainapermit tobuildanaddition.Decisionmade. Theyweredelightedat the thoughtofmixing
oldwithnew,yetat thesame time theyweredauntedby thegravityof theundertaking.With the
helpofArchitect PamFarrowandValleyviewConstruction’sPaulRogers, thehomeowners
achievedacohesivebalanceofold-worldcharmandnew-worldcomfort.
